Ok, maybe that’s stretching the truth, but all I got out of the name of this week’s wine was Weingut Hirsch #1.  After that it just looks the way words look when you’re trying to read one eyed after you’re bottle deep, so forget trying to pronounce it.  The full name of this Austrian gem is Weingut Hirsch #1 Grüner Veltliner 2009.  Try saying that one five times fast.  Personally I think the name sounds more like a group of portly suspender sporting yodelers or a brand of lederhosen, but as William Shakespeare profoundly penned all those years ago “What’s in a Name.”  In this case it’s a bottle of vibrant bouquets wrapped in an upside down reindeer.  As if the title isn’t confusing enough already, they throw in an upside down reindeer for posterity.

Upon opening, the bottle gives off a delicately sweet and faintly herbaceous smell reminiscent of a field of poppies.  Though it is decidedly white (made obvious by the straw color) the body is full and smoky, with almost red wine like characteristics. Apparently these were Guido grapes.  There are soft hints of pepper, melon and green apple that give each sip a juicy nuance that gives way to a velvety finish.  Like the perfect pair of shoes, it is sweet and sassy.  It has a decidedly bright and enjoyable taste; not overly acidic or sugary, it’s just right (cue the three bears). A star on its own or accompanied by the perfect partner, this wine deserves a standing ovation.

Keep you wallets full and your mouths happy!
